The sole is the whole argument

Flat does not mean plain. A lugged rubber tread gives a boot grip and a few millimetres of cushioning, and it changes the shape of the shoe, chunkier and more deliberate and far better under denim. A slim leather sole is the cleaner line and the more formal read, and it belongs to dry days and hard floors.

Then it is a question of how much leg you want to show. Ankle boots are the year-round answer, equally happy under trousers and over jeans. Knee high boots are the ones that make a dress look finished, and a flat shaft needs a close calf fit to hold its line.

Black does the work, brown makes it interesting

Black flat boots go with everything and ask nothing of you, which is why most wardrobes start there. Smooth leather polishes back after a wet week, and suede holds a depth of colour that black leather cannot.

Chelsea boots are the quickest version of the idea, with elastic panels and nothing to fasten. Once black is covered, tan and chocolate are where a boot collection gets its personality, and both sit more naturally with denim and winter neutrals than black ever manages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are flat boots suitable for walking long distances?

A: Generally yes, provided the sole has some cushioning and tread. A lugged rubber sole absorbs impact and grips wet surfaces, which makes a considerable difference across a full day of walking compared with a thin leather sole.

Q: How should knee high flat boots fit around the calf?

A: The shaft should sit close without pressing, since a flat boot has no heel to hold the leg forward and a loose shaft will slouch at the ankle. Check the calf measurement against the boot rather than relying on your usual size.

Q: Can you wear flat boots with dresses?

A: Yes. A knee high flat boot works under midi dresses and skirts, and an ankle boot pairs well with shorter hemlines. Keeping the boot and the hemline in similar tones keeps the leg line unbroken.

Q: How do I look after suede flat boots?

A: Spray them with a suede protector before the first wear and reapply through the season. Brush dried mud off rather than washing it, and let wet boots dry away from direct heat so the leather does not stiffen.
